Not what you'd expect when BJ Penn fights inside the Octagon. Penn, the UFC lightweight champion, picked up Florian and threw him down to the mat. The crowd inside the Wachovia Center awoke from its slumber. Penn maintained top control, mounted FLoriam with less than two minutes left, got back control, mounted him agan, then rolled into back control again. And there went the six-fight win streak for Florian as Penn defended his title at UFC 101. Penn (14-5-1) locked in a rear naked choke and sunk it in deep, forcing Florian (13-4) to tap out and end his two-year climb to another title shot 3:54 into the third round. Any more questions about what kind of shape BJ Penn is in? The UFC lightweight champion looked the best we've seen him in recent times, and refused to sit on the stool in his corner in between rounds. In the first round, Penn hit Florian with a quick right 30 seconds in that knocked him down but he popped back up. Later, Florian and Penn exchanged shots in the clinch, Florian via punches with his back against the cage, Penn with knees. Penn connected with a big right late in the first round that stunned Florian and earned him the round. Much of the same in the second round as Penn controlled the fight on his feet.  Florian was a bit more offensive in the third round and appeared to close the gap a bit. But Penn is the champion for a reason. With just one takedown, Penn turned away any late momentum Florian could mount.
